John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland on April 21, 1838. He had seven siblings. His father was extremely religious and whipped him as a child.
He moved to the United States in 1849. He had to work hard and wasn't allowed to read during the day. He made an invention that dumped him out of bed at 1 am every morning so he could study. He attended the University of Wisconsin in 1861 to study science. During this, he began to gain interest in plants. In1867 he began to study the "inventions of god." He set out walking in 1868 and walked as far as Cuba. He got married and had two daughters. After this, he worked on a fruit ranch in California until he had enough money to retire and permanently study plants. He was fascinated by freezing and glaciers and he went on expeditions to study this. In 1889, Muir began saying that Yosemite Valley should be a national park. He greatly influenced the government to make it a National Park. In 1892, he started the Sierra Club. It is an organization that is dedicated to preserving wild lands. He died on December 24, 1914 after publishing four books.
